SHINJI HORIMURA
Shinji Horimura is a self taught artist from Osaka, Japan.  He specializes in the male figure, especially vigorous Japanese men in traditional costumes at folk festivals. He captures masculinity and eroticism with delicate line drawings layered over rough patterns by stencils and woodcuts.
He began drawing and painting in 2004 while working as a display designer in New York City. His early works were strongly inspired by ethnic cultures from South America, Polynesia, and Southeast Asia.
Shinji returned to Osaka in 2011 and became a full time artist.
Ever since childhood his interests were the world, not his own country. but as he traveled to unexplored regions all over Japan and visited disappearing festivals, he became fascinated by the rich and unique culture that he had neglected for a long time. He also met and fell in love with traditional materials such as Washi paper, Sumi ink andcClay paint, many of which are in production crisis in the face of Westernization.
He started learning Taiko (Japanese Drum) casually hoping to get inspired for a future project and was quickly captivated by the raw powerful energy of the simple primitive instrument. His passion for Taiko is as high as for painting. He performs actively at local summer festivals and live concerts.
