ROBERT CHASE (US, 1919 - 2014)
Watercolorist Robert Chase work spanned much of the 20th century. Based in the West Florida town of Sarasota, he gained popularity in the late 50s and early 60s for his depictions of idyllic European scenes. His subject matter was often Florida landscapes, New Orleans, and, because of his proximity to the winter grounds of Ringling Bros in Sarasota, he often painted circus themes. Chase's skillful use of watercolor brought a unique fluidity to his works, blending realism with an almost dreamlike quality. Over time, his art became synonymous with the charm and cultural richness of the Gulf Coast, and his work remains a testament to the spirit of the mid-century era in which it was created.
