LUCINDA LUVAAS
Lucinda Luvaas is a multimedia artist working in fine art and video.
Her work has been featured on PBS, Channel Thirteen: NYC-Arts, PBS KLCS Los Angeles, and reviewed in the Huffington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer, Americana Magazine, and other publications. Her multimedia works are part of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum.
While young, she traveled abroad, living in the Middle East/Israel, working on a kibbutz, and later living in Jerusalem with her husband, the novelist William Luvaas. There, she began creating reverse glass paintings, a technique she learned from seamen on the Klek, a Yugoslav freighter bound for Europe.
She lived in Europe for almost two years. At that time she began devoting herself to visual art. Later she moved back to NYC and worked as a full-time muralist. Her murals were featured on "Good Morning America," a show examining murals around the country. The murals were also featured on CBS German TV and PBS/NYC. She was the director of the mural group for AND/Artists for Nuclear Disarmament. She worked with twenty other artists on murals about nuclear weapons and war. These works were commissioned by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and two more were created for June 12th March in 1982.
She was the Director of Mt. San Jacinto College’s Fine Art Gallery in Southern California, where she implemented a multifaceted program of art exhibitions, an author’s reading series, jazz and other music concerts, a Wednesday Afternoon Movie Series, and a yearly film festival.
Lucinda has screened her films worldwide and won many awards for cinematography, and best editing. Her most recent film: "Road 721" has been in 53 film festivals. This film's subject is global warming using California forests as the backdrop for its narrative. It is an environmental ghost story; a fantastical approach to a very disturbing subject.
She began showing her fine art regularly in the 1980s in NYC's East Village and beyond.
She has lived in England, Spain, Alaska, NYC, California, and Israel. She now lives in Los Angeles, CA, where she works full-time on her art and films.
